Sun and Soil Foundation Launches at Lake of Stars “Day of Ideas”

During the session, Sun and Soil Foundation shared its mission to strengthen rural livelihoods through solar-powered irrigation, climate-smart agriculture, and capacity building, with a focus on women, youth, and vulnerable farming households. The discussion highlighted how access to clean energy and practical skills can transform smallholder farming from subsistence to sustainable enterprise.

A key moment of the day was the engagement with the United Nations Resident Coordinator, who approached the Sun and Soil team to learn more about the Foundation’s work and its alignment with national and global development priorities. The interaction underscored the growing interest in locally driven, scalable solutions to climate resilience and food security in Malawi.

The Foundation also engaged directly with students from Nkhotakota, discussing agriculture as a viable career path and the role of innovation and renewable energy in modern farming. These conversations focused on inspiring young people to see farming not as a last resort, but as an opportunity for enterprise and impact.

In addition, Sun and Soil Foundation connected with women from local religious groups who shared their experiences of using income from farming to finance tailoring and small businesses. Their stories reinforced the importance of agriculture as a foundation for broader livelihood diversification and women’s economic empowerment.

The Lake of Stars launch marked an important milestone for Sun and Soil Foundation, setting the stage for national programmes aimed at reaching 10,000 farmers per year and contributing to a more food-secure, climate-resilient Malawi.
