Solar Irrigation Expansion in Nkhata Bay

Solar-powered pump in operation

We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of our latest solar irrigation project in Nkhata Bay, where five new high-capacity systems are now delivering consistent water access to smallholder farmers.

Addressing the Water Gap

For generations, farmers in this region have relied solely on seasonal rainfall, leaving them vulnerable to the increasing frequency of droughts and erratic weather patterns. Our latest intervention addresses this fundamental challenge by leveraging the region's most abundant resource: the sun.

Each system consists of high-efficiency photovaltaic panels, a smart controller, and a submersible pump capable of moving thousands of litres of water per hour without a single drop of diesel. This not only eliminates the high cost of fuel but also removes the heavy carbon footprint typically associated with mechanical irrigation.

50+

Households Empowered

Direct access to year-round water has transformed the daily lives of over 50 farming families.

3x

Crop Yield Potential

Farmers are now able to harvest three times a year instead of once, significantly increasing food security.

From Subsistence to Business

"Before this system, our children often went to bed hungry during the lean months," says a local farmer leader. "Now, we are not just growing food for ourselves; we are becoming suppliers for the local markets."

Along with the hardware, Sun & Soil Foundation provided hands-on training in drip irrigation management and basic system maintenance, ensuring the community has the skills to sustain this infrastructure for years to come.
